Helena Hong Gao

Helena Hong Gao received her PhD degree in general linguistics from Lund University, Sweden, and conducted post-doctoral research in cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto, Canada. While at the Cognitive Development Lab/Child Study Centre at the University of Toronto, she taught and supervised students in cognitive psychology and human development, while conducting research in cognitive development and child language acquisition.

Later, in the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), she extended her teaching, student supervision and research activities to include Chinese linguistics, bilingual development and cognitive linguistics, and established a bilingual development lab with funding from the Ministry of Education of Singapore.

Dr. Gao was also involved in teaching and curriculum design in translation studies and was the founding director of NTU’s Master of Arts in Translation and Interpretation Programme. Her current research focuses on psycholinguistics and bilingual development.
